EPSRC Project Funded PhD Studentship Merit Scholarship Application


These Merit Scholarship Application will focus on the collection, analysis and modeling of extreme storm response data from a number of coastal sites that are important to the UK energy supply (eg, Bradwell, Dungeness, Heysham, Oldbury, Sellafield, Sizewell). Data will be collected during storm events were selected from a variety of coastal systems (tidal flat, sandy beach with sand dunes, gravel barrier, soft rock) by using the University of Plymouth `s Coastal Response Unit.

This
Merit Scholarship Application unit consists of a large van equipped with video surveillance towers, terrestrial laser scanner, quad-bike mounted RTK-GPS system and device some self-logging water level monitoring, and can be mobilized within a very short time to monitor the coast. The Merit Scholarship Application successful candidate will be responsible for planning and implementation of field trials, and analyzing and modeling of field data, but will be assisted by a team of experienced and multi-disciplinary oversight.


Worthiness

Merit Scholarship Application Candidates should have a first class degree or upper second award in the Ocean Science, Geography or Engineering discipline. Applicants with a relevant MSc or MRes in a related topic would be very acceptable count. Candidates should have a proven competency in the collection (eg, DGPS, video monitoring, wave / tidal measurement) and analysis (eg, Matlab) from coastal field data. Some expertise in numerical modeling will also be desirable.


This
Merit Scholarship Application is supported for 3 years and includes a full Home / EU tuition fees plus an allowance of £ 13,590 per year. The scholarship will fund only those applicants who qualify for Home / EU fee with the relevant qualifications. Applicants are usually required to cover the cost of overseas will have to cover the difference between Home / EU tuition fees and tariffs abroad (around £ 9,250 per year).
